What it means

Always Has Been reached its final form in June 2020, when a two-astronaut drawing swept Twitter: the first looks down at an unexpected truth below and says wait, its all followed by the discovery, and the second, standing behind with a raised pistol, answers always has been. The format evolved from earlier astronaut drawings in 2018 and 2019, but the gun version is the one that stuck. The template captures the moment a naive observer finally sees what everyone else already knew, and the second speaker exists to enforce the status quo. Captions thrive on absurd revelations, from whole countries to secret fandom rules, and the cold delivery of always has been does the punchline work every time.

When to use it

  • Revealing a shocking truth someone should have known all along
  • Joking that something suspicious was secretly universal
  • Setting up a wait, its all X moment answered coldly
