What it means

Forever Alone is one of the flagship rage-comic faces, first drawn in 2010 on 4chan as a crudely MS-Painted head with enormous round eyes, wavy basset-hound cheeks, and streaming tears. While other rage faces express anger or glee, Forever Alone exists for pure self-pity: the caption describes some mundane social situation, and the face delivers the realization that the narrator is, and always will be, completely alone. It became shorthand for loneliness on the internet, spawning copypastas, videos, and a decade of ironic reuse. The jokes sting comes from overstatement: the situation is usually trivial, like eating lunch without company, but the reaction is operatic despair, letting people laugh at their own isolation.

When to use it

• Exaggerating mild loneliness into epic personal tragedy
• Self-deprecating jokes about being single or left out
• Reacting to plans that quietly dissolved without you
