What it means

Ancient Aliens features Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, a promoter of the ancient-astronaut theory, gesturing with both hands on the History Channel series Ancient Aliens, which premiered in 2010. His wild, gravity-defying hair and earnest delivery turned a single interview still into one of the fastest-spreading memes of late 2010 and 2011. The caption formula always ends with the word aliens: the top line names any unexplained phenomenon, from pyramids to why your cat stares at a wall, and the bottom line declares aliens. The meme is affectionate mockery, less about the show itself than about any explanation that skips all reasonable steps and lands on the most exotic answer available. It remains the default punchline for leaps of logic.

When to use it

  • Blaming any mystery or inconvenience on an absurd outside force
  • Mocking explanations that skip logic and jump to a wild conclusion
  • Answering trivial everyday questions with theatrical conspiracy
