What it means

This Is Fine comes from the webcomic Gunshow by cartoonist KC Green, specifically a January 2013 strip titled On Fire, in which a small dog in a bowler hat sips coffee in a room engulfed in flames and calmly declares This is fine, before eventually melting. The sixth panel escaped the comic around 2014, became a full reaction format by 2016, and now stands as the internets definitive image of denial in the face of disaster. The template captures the precise moment when things are objectively not fine and you say they are: failing projects, burning schedules, overwhelming news cycles. Green has said he wrote it about a bad patch of his own life, which explains why it hits so hard.

When to use it

  • Pretending a situation is under control while everything burns
  • Reacting to compounding problems with eerie calm
  • Mocking official reassurances during obvious disasters
