What it means

Bike Fall is a four-panel stick-figure comic in which a cyclist rides along, deliberately jams a stick into his own front wheel, crashes spectacularly, and then on the ground blames someone else with the line why would they do this. The comic became a beloved template in the mid-2010s, and its formula is devastatingly simple: the caption names the culprit being blamed, while the second panel quietly shows the sabotage was self-inflicted. The template is the internet favorite for self-sabotage followed by scapegoating, used against people, companies, and communities that engineer their own problems and then point fingers. The final panels blame delivery works with almost any target, which is why it has never really gone away.

When to use it

  • Mocking someone who causes their own problem and blames others
  • Joking about self-sabotage followed by outrage at the outcome
  • Calling out groups that blame outside forces for their own choices
