What it means

Distracted Boyfriend comes from a stock photo taken by Barcelona photographer Antonio Guillem in Girona, Spain, in 2015 and uploaded to iStock as Disloyal Man With His Girlfriend Looking At Another Girl. It went unnoticed until January 2017, when a Turkish Facebook group labeled the three figures, then exploded across Twitter, Reddit and Instagram in August 2017. The man stands for whoever is being tempted, the woman in red is the shiny new distraction, and the girlfriend is whatever is already being neglected. The format became the flagship of the object-labeling era and won Meme of the Year at the 2018 Shorty Awards. People reach for it whenever attention drifts from what matters to what merely looks exciting.

When to use it

  • Choosing a tempting new option over the one you already committed to
  • Joking about starting a new side project while the old one sits unfinished
  • Pointing out a group or company chasing hype and ignoring its own users
