What it means

This template uses the same frame as Is this a pigeon, taken from the 1991 anime The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird, in which the android Yutaro Katori mistakes a butterfly for a pigeon while studying nature. Here the butterfly keeps the spotlight: posters swap in a picture of something else and let the characters earnest question do the work. The joke is a confident misidentification. Someone stares directly at a thing, gives it the wrong name, and means it sincerely. After the frame resurfaced on Tumblr in 2011 it became a full-blown object-labeling format in 2018, and it still shows up whenever someone hopelessly miscategorizes what is right in front of them.

When to use it

  • Pointing at something familiar and asking whether it is something else entirely
  • Mocking confident takes that completely miss the category
  • Reacting to a product or update that is not what the marketing says
