What it means

What is this, a Center for Ants comes from the 2001 comedy Zoolander, in which Derek Zoolander inspects a tiny architectural model of his planned school and, mistaking it for the full-size building, angrily demands to know how children can learn to read if they cannot even fit inside the building. The scene became a template for anything absurdly small: a portion of food, a UI element, a raise, a parking space. The full punchline, what is this, a center for ants, is so quotable that it works as shorthand whenever scale fails expectations. The angrier Derek looks, the funnier the tiny thing being criticized.

When to use it

  • Mocking anything comically undersized, from portions to buttons
  • Complaining about small text, tiny raises, or shrunken portions
  • Quoting Zoolander whenever scale defies common sense
