What it means

where monkey comes from the BBC comedy series Walk on the Wild Side, which redubbed nature documentary footage with talking animals, and its most famous bit features orangutans sitting at a news desk looking profoundly out of their depth. The meme, which lives in deliberately lowercase broken English, expresses confusion at being somewhere you do not belong: new job, first day at the gym, reading legal documents. The caption is usually a single dazed question, and the apes' blank stares carry the exact feeling of having no idea what is happening but being too polite to leave. It is self-deprecating confusion at its purest.

When to use it

  • Feeling lost in a situation you don't understand
  • First days at jobs, gyms, or confusing events
  • Deliberately broken-English confusion, like where banana
