What it means

Mocking SpongeBob is a screenshot from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode Little Yellow Book, showing SpongeBob bent forward with a beak-faced, sullen grimace. The frame became a meme in May 2017 and spawned a complete typographic convention of its own: captions are written in alternating capital and lowercase letters, like tHiS, to signal a mocking, sing-song tone of voice. The format repeats what someone else said, in their own words, twisted into a childish imitation, so the top line is usually an opinion and the bottom line is that same opinion worn as a taunt. It weaponized a text style that had existed in chat for years and remains the internet standard for parroting someone sarcastically.

When to use it

  • Repeating someones words back in a mocking, childish voice
  • Parroting an opinion you find ridiculous, in alternating caps
  • Mimicking a take so it sounds as silly as you think it is
