What it means
Is this a pigeon? is a screen grab from the 1991 anime The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird. In the scene, the android Yutaro Katori is studying nature, points at a butterfly, and earnestly asks whether it is a pigeon. The frame reached Tumblr in 2011, but it was not until April and May 2018 that object-labeled versions flooded Twitter, with brands and Netflix joining in. Both the butterfly and the subtitle get relabeled, so the format now stands for any confident misreading: someone looks straight at a thing, names it something else entirely, and cannot be talked out of it. It is the meme for category errors and cheerful cluelessness.
When to use it
- Mocking someone who confidently misidentifies something obvious
- Calling out a rebrand or feature that is not what it claims to be
- Laughing at your own cluelessness in a situation you should understand
