What it means

Monkey Puppet comes from the Japanese childrens television program Okiku naru Ko, which ran for decades from 1959, and features an orange monkey puppet caught mid-glance, eyes darting sideways in pure unease. English-speaking internet users rediscovered the clip in 2016, and the frame became the definitive reaction image for awkward avoidance. The formula is simple and universal: the caption states something uncomfortable, incriminating, or callout-shaped, and the monkeys sideways glance is everyone who hopes the topic does not turn to them. It also works in reverse, as the face you make when you realize everyone is now looking at you. Few images capture the flight response of social discomfort so economically.

When to use it

  • Reacting to awkward silence after an uncomfortable truth
  • Avoiding eye contact when a callout is clearly coming
  • Capturing the moment you quietly hope no one notices you
