What it means
The Most Interesting Man in the World comes from Dos Equis' long-running ad campaign launched in 2006, starring actor Jonathan Goldsmith as a bearded legend of improbable exploits. The ad's structure, I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis, became a template in the early 2010s: the caption confesses a rare or reluctant habit, then declares that when it happens, it is done with absurd specificity or style. The joke lives in the mock-grandeur of the portrait applied to mundane behavior, like I don't always do laundry, but when I do, everything I own is dirty. It remains the classic format for framing personal quirks as legendary choices.
When to use it
- Framing a rare habit as a legendary event
- I don't always X, but when I do punchlines
- Mock-glorifying mundane personal routines
