What it means
Laughing Leo is Leonardo DiCaprio as the plantation owner Calvin Candie in the 2012 film Django Unchained, caught mid-laugh with a drink in hand, eyes crinkled with a laugh that has curdled into something smug and condescending. In the film the laugh is chilling; as a meme it became the internet's picture of amused contempt. The caption names the thing being laughed at, and Leo's expression communicates that the laugher finds it entertaining precisely because it is beneath him: a bad take, a failed prediction, a rival's misfortune, or one's own terrible decision working out anyway. It is the go-to image for laughing at someone rather than with them, with a champagne-flavored edge.
When to use it
- Smug, condescending laughter at a bad take or failure
- Laughing at your own questionable decision that worked out
- Amused contempt delivered with a raised drink
