What it means

Disaster Girl is four-year-old Zoë Roth, photographed in January 2005 by her father Dave Roth in front of a controlled fire drill in their North Carolina town. He posted the photo to Flickr in 2007, and by 2008 editors had moved her smirk to scenes of every imaginable catastrophe, from wars to film sets to Mars. The template casts the girl as the calm mastermind behind the chaos behind her, so captions pair a smug first-person claim with a disaster in progress. The joke is always that she planned it, and she is not sorry. In April 2021 the original photo sold as an NFT for roughly 500,000 dollars, which Zoë used to pay off student loans and donate to charity.

When to use it

  • Claiming innocent credit for a disaster that only looks accidental
  • Joking about leaving a mess, a deadline, or a group project behind you
  • Captioning a smug escape from chaos you helped create
