What it means
Two Guys on a Bus is a motivational illustration by Brazilian cartoonist Genildo Ronchi that the internet turned into a meme format around 2020. The drawing shows two passengers on opposite sides of the same bus: one stares glumly at a blank wall, the other gazes at a magnificent sunlit landscape through his window. The lesson of the original, that attitude determines experience, becomes a caption machine: both sides are labeled, and the meme is used either sincerely to praise perspective or ironically to point out that one side of the bus objectively has a better view. It is the rare template that works equally well as wholesome content and as a joke about circumstances.
When to use it
- Contrasting two attitudes toward the same situation
- Labeling the bright and bleak sides of any experience
- Sincere motivational posts or ironic commentary on perspective
