What it means
You Know, I'm Something of a Scientist Myself is a line delivered by Norman Osborn, played by Willem Dafoe, in Spider-Man from 2002, when he tries to bond with Peter Parker over their shared interest in science. The frame became a meme around 2017 as the definitive way to mock unearned expertise: the caption pairs the quote with someone claiming deep authority after the most superficial possible exposure to a subject. It lands on the guy who watched one documentary and now lectures the room, the person who skimmed a Wikipedia article before an argument, and the self-appointed expert whose credentials are entirely vibes. The smug sincerity on Dafoe's face is what sells the joke, because the character truly believes it.
When to use it
- Mocking self-appointed experts with superficial knowledge
- Self-deprecating jokes about pretending to understand a topic
- Reacting to someone citing one article as full credentials
