What it means

Skeptical Snake is a close-up photograph of a green vine snake staring straight into the lens with narrowed, unimpressed eyes and a flat, unamused line of a mouth. Nature photography rarely produces a more human expression of doubt, and the internet adopted the image as a reaction to claims that demand a raised eyebrow. The caption states the excuse, the alibi, or the too-good-to-be-true promise, and the snake's icy stare does the entire rebuttal without a word. It works for everything from a dog sitting beside an obviously chewed shoe to a software update that claims it will only take a minute, because the face says exactly what everyone is thinking: sure you are.

When to use it

• Reacting to an excuse or claim nobody believes
• Expressing silent doubt with a single unimpressed stare
• Responding to too-good-to-be-true promises
