What it means

The Rock Driving is a three-panel exploitable built from the 2009 Disney film Race to Witch Mountain, in which Dwayne Johnson's cab driver Jack Bruno asks a question, his young passenger Sara answers with something alarming, and Johnson whips his head around in magnificent shock. The format originated on Newgrounds on July 29, 2009, and became one of the earliest widely remixed multi-panel comics on forums and 4chan. The structure is a conversation ending in a headline: panel one is the innocent setup, panel two is the cursed fact, and panel three is the universal face of regret. It is the definitive template for a casual question that gets an answer nobody was prepared to hear.

When to use it

  • A casual question answered with a horrifying fact
  • Delivering a twist that makes someone whip around in shock
  • Joking about the exact moment a conversation goes wrong
