What it means

The Drake meme is built from two frames of the October 2015 music video for Hotline Bling, in which Drake dances alone inside a color-shifting cube. In the top frame he turns away with his hand up in refusal; in the bottom frame he points and smiles in approval. The stills were isolated as reaction images on 4chan in late 2015, and by 2016 the two-panel version had become the internet default for stating a preference. Whatever sits beside the scowling Drake is the option being rejected, and whatever sits beside the smiling Drake is the one being chosen. The joke lands hardest when the approved option is clearly the worse one, or the one everyone secretly picks anyway.

When to use it

  • Comparing two options where you obviously prefer the second
  • Admitting you picked the worse habit on purpose
  • Mocking a company that rejects the sensible option and ships the bad one
