What it means

Surprised Pikachu is a screenshot from the Pokemon anime, taken from season one, episode ten, Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village, where Pikachu stands with his mouth open in shock. The frame became a reaction image when Tumblr user popokko posted it on September 26, 2018, and within weeks it was everywhere on Reddit, Twitter and Facebook. The joke is fake surprise: you describe a choice whose outcome anyone could see coming, then let Pikachus stunned face stand in for the reaction. The more inevitable the result, the better the meme works. HD versions from later Pokemon media keep the format fresh more than seven years later.

When to use it

  • Reacting to a consequence that was completely predictable
  • Mocking yourself for ignoring advice and then facing the result
  • Calling out a company that seems shocked by its own decision
