What it means

Hide the Pain Harold is András Arató, a Hungarian electrical engineer whose stock photos, shot around 2011, feature a smile that reaches the mouth but never the eyes. Commenters on Facepalm and 4chan noticed the suffering behind the grin around 2014, gave him the name Harold, and built a format around it: the caption describes an outwardly pleasant situation that is quietly a disaster, and Harolds face supplies the truth. Arató first resisted the memes, worried about his professional reputation, but eventually embraced them, giving a TEDx talk and starring in campaigns, becoming one of the rare stock-photo models to own their meme fame. He is now the universal face of masking agony with politeness.

When to use it

  • Smiling through a situation that is clearly falling apart
  • Joking about pretending everything is fine at work or home
  • Captioning forced positivity over quiet suffering
