What it means

Gru's Plan comes from the 2013 animated film Despicable Me 2, in which the villain Gru presents his scheme on an easel with confident enthusiasm. The four-panel meme format took off in late 2016: panels one and two state the plan and its next step, panel three repeats the presenter still smiling as the card reveals an unintended consequence, and panel four shows Gru doing a horrified double-take at the same card. The comedy lives in the third panel, where the presenter has not yet noticed that step three undoes everything. The template is ideal for plans that sound coherent until they reach their own logic, and it works for everything from daily routines to business strategies that quietly defeat themselves.

When to use it

  • Revealing a plan that accidentally defeats its own goal
  • Presenting steps one to four, where step three ruins everything
  • Joking about routines or strategies with a built-in flaw nobody noticed
