What it means

Batman Slapping Robin is a panel from World's Finest Comics #153, published by DC in July 1965, in an imaginary story where Batman wrongly believes Supermans father is responsible for his own fathers death. In the panel he backhands Robin to shut down the boys mild objection. The panel resurfaced as an image macro in the late 2000s and became a durable fixture of forum culture. The formula is fixed: Robin calmly states an opinion, fact, or request, and Batman answers mid-slap with the counterpoint, whether it is popular sentiment, an angry rebuttal, or a flat contradiction. The humor comes from Batmans wildly disproportionate response to a perfectly reasonable statement.

When to use it

  • Shutting down a reasonable statement with an overwhelming counterpoint
  • Representing the loud majority answer to a mild, polite take
  • Mocking a community that reacts to gentle criticism with fury
