What it means

Futurama Fry is a screenshot of Philip J. Fry from the Futurama episode The Lesser of Two Evils, which aired in 2000, showing him squinting hard with narrowed eyes. The frame became the Not Sure If meme around 2012, when captions like Not sure if trolling, or just stupid paired it with every ambiguous situation online. The formula is strict and satisfying: the top line states two possibilities that look identical from where you stand, and the bottom line begins with or just to deliver the paranoid alternative. Frys strained squint perfectly captures the mental gymnastics of trying to detect sarcasm, irony, or sincerity in a message, which keeps the format alive in every era of confusing internet communication.

When to use it

  • Weighing two possibilities that are impossible to tell apart
  • Reacting to a message you cannot decode as sincere or sarcastic
  • Suspiciously rethinking a decision that looked simple a second ago
