What it means

Expanding Brain, better known as Galaxy Brain, is a multi-panel ladder that ranks ideas from ordinary to supposedly enlightened. It started on Reddit in January 2017 inside the whomst joke, pairing increasingly absurd spellings of who with increasingly glowing brains, then spread through r/dankmemes in February 2017. Each step looks smarter than the last, but the final cosmic brain always belongs to the most ridiculous option, which is the whole point. The format works ironically: it flatters terrible ideas with the visual language of genius, and the gap between the glowing brain and the awful take is the punchline. Galaxy brain is now slang for reasoning that is too clever by half.

When to use it

  • Ranking solutions to a problem from sensible to completely unhinged
  • Mocking an overcomplicated argument that sounds smart and is not
  • Celebrating a bad decision as if it were a stroke of genius
