What it means

They Don't Know is an illustration of a young man standing alone in the corner of a house party, cup in hand, while everyone else dances and socializes nearby. The drawing circulated on imageboards for years before the caption format they dont know I crystallized around 2020. The template works through poignant comedy: the wallflower clings to some private identity, achievement, or obsession, and the caption declares it while the party continues, oblivious. The joke can be self-deprecating, celebrating niche knowledge nobody at the party would care about, or quietly sad, capturing the feeling of being surrounded by people and completely apart from them. Both readings are why the format has such staying power.

When to use it

  • Joking about niche knowledge nobody at the party shares
  • Mocking your own secret pride in an unimpressive achievement
  • Capturing social isolation with a private identity nobody sees
