What it means

Winter is coming is the motto of House Stark in Game of Thrones, and the meme pairs a solemn portrait of Ned Stark, played by Sean Bean, with the setup line brace yourselves followed by an incoming wave of something trivial. The format exploded in 2011 alongside the show's first season and became the standard way to announce a predictable seasonal or event-based flood: brace yourselves, exam posts are coming, brace yourselves, pumpkin spice everything. The humor is the mismatch between Ned's apocalyptic gravity and the harmless avalanche being predicted, and Sean Bean's famously doomed face adds a layer of mock-seriousness no other template can match.

When to use it

  • Announcing an incoming wave of predictable posts or trends
  • Seasonal warnings delivered with mock gravity
  • Framing any harmless flood of content as an approaching storm
