What it means

It's Happening comes from the cold open of The Office's season 5 episode Stress Relief, first aired in 2009, in which Michael Scott, faced with Dwight's simulated fire, runs in circles shouting okay, it's happening, everybody calm down, perfectly fusing panic and the demand for calm. The frame and GIF became the internet's dual-purpose reaction for the moment a long-anticipated thing finally arrives: the caption names the event, and Michael's flailing represents everyone who waited for it and is now completely unprepared for it having happened. It reads equally as hype and as catastrophe, which is exactly why it covers product launches, patch notes, exam results, and family announcements with the same unhinged energy.

When to use it

  • Reacting when the long-awaited thing finally arrives
  • Panic and hype fused into one flailing response
  • Announcing breaking news with maximum chaos
