What it means

Two Buttons, also called Daily Struggle, began as a comic by animator Jake Clark, posted to Tumblr on October 25, 2014. A sweating figure in a red suit stares at two red buttons labeled BE A DICK and DONT BE A DICK, unable to press either. It reached Imgur and Reddit in early 2015 and has been relabeled ever since. The template is internet shorthand for an impossible choice or a flat contradiction: both buttons look reasonable alone, and pressing either one exposes you. A popular 2020 remix let the character press both at once, which became its own joke about wanting everything at the same time.

When to use it

  • Facing two options where both cost you something
  • Pointing out a group holding two beliefs that contradict each other
  • Turning a small everyday decision into an agonizing dilemma
