What it means
The Rent Is Too Damn High comes from Jimmy McMillan, founder of the Rent Is Too Damn High Party, whose impassioned delivery of the line during a New York gubernatorial debate in October 2010 made him an overnight internet icon. The template keeps his image and swaps the complaint: X is too damn high, applied to prices, difficulty, expectations, or the temperature of the office. McMillan's unmistakable look, white gloves and sculpted sideburns, gives every edit an air of absolute sincerity, which is the engine of the joke. It remains the go-to format for any complaint that deserves to be shouted rather than explained.
When to use it
- Declaring any price, difficulty, or metric absurdly high
- Swapping rent for whatever has crossed the line
- Shouting a grievance with total sincerity
