What it means

That Would Be Great comes from the 1999 comedy Office Space, in which the insufferable manager Bill Lumbergh delivers passive-aggressive requests with his signature drawl: yeah, if you could just come in on Sunday, that'd be great. The format became the corporate world's favorite template for dressing up an unwelcome demand in polite filler. The caption follows the cadence exactly: if you could just do the annoying thing, that would be great. It spread from workplace humor into general use for any mealy-mouthed imposition, and the mug-holding, suspenders-wearing portrait does half the work, radiating the exact energy of a request that is not really a request.

When to use it

  • Making a passive-aggressive request in office speak
  • Dressing up an unwelcome demand as polite courtesy
  • Mocking corporate jargon and faux-flexible policies
