What it means

Facepalm is one of the oldest and most honored reaction images on the internet: Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: The Next Generation, captured with his head lowered into his hand, eyes closed, bearing the collective stupidity of the universe in a single gesture. The still comes from the 1988 episode Descent's filming era promotion but became a meme staple in the mid-2000s, long before reaction GIFs were everywhere. The caption above it supplies the statement, question, or decision so predictable in its foolishness that words fail, and Picard's palm completes the sentence. It is the international symbol for I have no response that would be productive.

When to use it

  • Reacting to foolishness that leaves you speechless
  • Exasperation at a predictably bad decision or take
  • The universal gesture when words would be wasted
