What it means

Get Better Material is a four-panel comic from Josh Barkman's webcomic False Knees, published in August 2016 under the title Stand-up Cawmedian. A crow performs stand-up comedy, a heckler yells boo, get better material, and the final panel shows the crow sweating as it checks its cue cards, which contain nothing but caw caw caw, the new material being exactly the old material with more caws. As a meme it is the definitive image of responding to criticism by doing the identical thing again, louder: the first box holds the tired bit, product, or habit being booed, and the second box reveals the revised version, which is the same thing with a cosmetic change. Franchises, brands, and personal habits are all fair game.

When to use it

  • Mocking a repeat performance presented as new material
  • Franchises and brands rebooting the same thing louder
  • Your own habit of responding to criticism with more of the same
