What it means

I Immediately Regret This Decision is Brick Tamland, played by Steve Carell, in the 2004 comedy Anchorman, spoken in the middle of the film's legendary street brawl as the weatherman realizes that joining the melee was, in hindsight, unwise. The line became the internet's concise confession of instant remorse: the caption sets up the impulse, and the quote lands at the exact moment consequences begin. It covers everything from agreeing to a third round of drinks to adopting a second cat to accepting a meeting invite at 5:59 p.m. The comedy is in the word immediately, the regret is not eventual reflection but a real-time report from the scene of the mistake.

When to use it

• Live-reporting regret in the middle of a bad decision
• Joking about impulses that go wrong within seconds
• Confessing buyer's remorse or instant consequence
