What it means

First Try! is a still from The Lego Movie from 2014, showing LEGO Batman grimacing in tight-jawed disbelief while Benny the blue spaceman beams with pure joy, both looking at something offscreen. The caption format runs the contrast perfectly: the top line names something that famously never works the first time, a USB plug, a code build, parallel parking, and the bottom line is Benny's triumphant shout of first try! The joke works in two directions, sincere celebration of a lucky attempt or sarcastic bragging about a success everyone suspects took fifty hidden tries, with Batman's face conveniently available to voice the audience's skepticism. It has become a staple of gaming, coding, and DIY humor.

When to use it

  • Celebrating something working on the very first attempt
  • Sarcastic bragging about a suspiciously lucky success
  • Gaming, coding, and DIY wins with LEGO bravado
