What it means
Success Kid is Sammy Griner, photographed in August 2007 at eleven months old by his mother Laney on a Florida beach, grimly clenching a fistful of sand. The picture first circulated as I hate sandcastles, framing the baby as a tiny tyrant, but in 2011 it flipped into Success Kid and the meaning inverted: the clenched fist became a triumphant fist pump. The format celebrates small, often petty victories, with the caption split between a modest setup and a below-the-fold win. It became mainstream enough that the Griner family used it in a 2012 GoFundMe that exceeded its goal, and versions ran in political campaigns and corporate ads. It remains the internets fist pump for modest triumphs.
When to use it
- Celebrating a tiny win that only you care about
- Bragging about a plan that somehow worked out perfectly
- Marking a small everyday victory with mock solemnity
