What it means

Grumpy Cat was Tardar Sauce, a mixed-breed female cat from Morristown, Arizona, whose permanently disgruntled face came from feline dwarfism and an underbite. Her photo hit Reddit on September 22, 2012, and within 48 hours she was an international star, spawning a merchandise empire, two movies, and the 2013 Webby for Meme of the Year. The caption convention is deadpan negativity: a cheerful premise on top, and Grumpy Cats flat rejection below, usually phrased as No or an unimpressed restatement. The humor comes from the mismatch between an enthusiastic world and a face that refuses to participate in it. Tardar Sauce died on May 14, 2019, but her scowl remains the internets all-purpose symbol of contempt for fun.

When to use it

  • Answering an excited announcement with flat, utter refusal
  • Mocking a hype trend you have zero interest in joining
  • Restating someones enthusiasm as the worst possible interpretation
