What it means

Who Killed Hannibal is a segment from The Eric Andre Show in which host Eric Andre pulls out a gun, fires several rounds into his co-host Hannibal Buress, then turns to the camera and asks why would Hannibal do this, walking away before anyone can answer. The clip, which aired in 2017, became the internet's definitive anatomy of shameless self-sabotage: the caption structure labels the shooter, the victim, and the innocent-faced question that follows. It is used for anyone who breaks something and immediately blames the victim, from governments defunding services then wondering why they fail, to you setting three alarms and blaming the alarm. The audacity of the pivot is what keeps it evergreen.

When to use it

  • Blaming the victim of your own obvious sabotage
  • Breaking something then asking who could have done this
  • Mocking audacious refusal of accountability
