What it means

What the Hell is This? is a still from the Family Guy episode You May Now Kiss the... Uh... Guy Who Receives, first aired in 2006, in which Noah, loading animals onto the ark two by two, discovers that the elephant and the penguin have produced an elephant-headed penguin, and demands an explanation with outstretched, indignant arms. As an object-labeling template, popularized from 2018 onward, the two parent animals get labeled with two separate things, and the hybrid gets labeled with their combination: the format's whole purpose is judging hybrids nobody asked for, from food mashups to workplace roles that merge two jobs into one cursed position. Noah's exasperation gives every abomination a formal hearing.

When to use it

  • Judging a combination of two things nobody asked for
  • Labeling two parents and their cursed hybrid
  • Demanding an explanation for an unholy mashup
