What it means
Laughing Lizard, also known as hhhehehe, is a close-up photograph of a horned lizard whose slightly agape mouth reads as a stifled human snicker. Nature photographer Casey Myers took the original photo at Arizona's Tonto National Forest and posted it online in 2009, and on August 17, 2011 a Tumblr user added the interior-monologue caption hhhehehe, instantly turning a wildlife shot into a reaction image. The format is used for lowbrow, petty, or mischievous amusement: the joke you probably should not find funny, the pun that ruins a conversation, the tiny prank that only you appreciate. The caption convention often keeps the typed wheeze itself as the punchline, letting the lizard do the giggling.
When to use it
- Reacting to something juvenile or mischievous with a stifled snicker
- Petty amusement at a dumb pun or tiny prank
- Expressing guilty-pleasure laughter with hhhehehe energy
