What it means

Epic Handshake is a frame from the 1987 action film Predator, in which Dutch, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Dillon, played by Carl Weathers, greet each other with an absurdly muscular mid-air hand clasp that turns into a partial bicep curl. The still became a captioned format in the early 2010s and settled into a clean three-label formula: each arm belongs to a different group, faction, or person, and the clasped hands in the middle hold the one thing they unexpectedly agree on. The comedy comes from scale and incongruity, because the worlds most aggressive greeting is used to celebrate small, wholesome, or highly specific common ground. It remains the go-to format for finding unity between unlikely allies.

When to use it

• Highlighting one thing two very different groups agree on
• Celebrating an unexpected crossover of interests or fandoms
• Uniting rival teams, products, or people over a shared flaw or love
