What it means

Expectation vs. Reality is one of the most enduring comparative formats on the internet: two stacked images, the top labeled expectation showing the polished ideal, the bottom labeled reality showing what actually happened. The format long predates any single image, drawing on stock photos, recipe fails, and Pinterest crafts, and it thrives because everyone owns the same gap between their plans and their outcomes. It is the perfect vehicle for DIY disasters, cooking attempts, gym transformations, travel photos versus hotel views, and anything purchased online that arrives looking like a rough sketch of the listing photo. The humor needs no punchline because the bottom image is the punchline.

When to use it

  • Comparing an idealized plan with its disappointing result
  • DIY, cooking, and travel fails in two panels
  • Mocking online purchases that arrived as rough approximations
